Low Testosterone level – Your Testosterone May Be Lower than You Think

Low Testosterone level – Your Testosterone May Be Lower than You Think: Okay, time to stop scrolling through your twitter feed and conversations on Reddit and instead, pay attention to this article.

If you’re a man, then you most likely have Low Testosterone level. These low levels don’t clear up on their own—they set you up for a variety of health problems in the future you definitely don’t want to deal with.

While you think you understand the purpose of testosterone, there may be much you don’t know about low testosterone including when and how it affects men.

For starters, let’s dispel a few myths:

  • Low T is not exclusive to men over the age of 40. In fact, low levels can begin in a man’s early 20s and become a serious problem very quickly.
  • Heavy squats can increase your T levels post workout, however, that increase does not lead to muscle gains.
  • Your post workout shake could be lowering your testosterone.

If you’re confused, you’re not alone. Right now, you’re exactly where you are supposed to be, getting the information you need to take action so you can bring your hormones back into balance.

Our understanding of testosterone is changing. Low T is not exclusive to aging men and isn’t a problem that can be fixed with pills. What most already know is that testosterone is the primary male growth hormone. With it you can build muscle and burn fat. More importantly, it’s what powers your sex drive, fights depression and helps prevent diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Testosterone naturally begins to drop off in a man’s 30s and 40s however, what we are learning is that the average level of testosterone has dropped anywhere from 20 to 30 percent in the last 20 years. More than 5 million men have been diagnosed with low testosterone and, according to the International Journal of Clinical Practice, more than 12 million men suffer from hormone imbalances but are unaware the problems exist.

Why is low t persistent and increasing problem? The simple answer is fat. The heavier you are, the lower your testosterone will be. More accurately, the more fat you carry around your abdomen, the more aromatase you produce, an enzyme that converts your testosterone into the female hormone estrogen. This can decrease muscle mass, harm arousal and even affect your mood. By trimming the fat, you can ensure balanced hormones, normal T levels and continue looking young for as long as possible.

Studies also suggest that lack of sleep is closely linked to low testosterone. In combination with high stress, you have a recipe for imbalanced hormones.

Stress triggers an increase in cortisol, a hormone in the body associated with interruptions in sleep patterns. Lack of sleep elevates cortisol levels even more which leads to worsening sleep patterns. Research indicates that poor quality sleep could cause up to a 15 percent decrease in testosterone, giving you a great reason to reduce stress and sleep more.

In addition to sleep, stress, and fat, the voice of many can have a huge impact on testosterone. Alcohol can lower your testosterone by as much as 10 percent according to research. Even more alarming, researchers reported that the drop took only 3 weeks meaning prolonged consumption could be even more harmful.

Mainstream media would like you to believe that the only way to improve a hormone issue is with drugs when in fact testosterone therapy has been linked to cardiac issues and even decreased sperm production.

On the other hand, boosting testosterone naturally isn’t all that difficult. In addition to a diet rich in whole plant foods, regular exercise, and restful sleep, natural supplements can be hugely beneficial.

A study out of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas examined the effects of fenugreek supplementation on strength and body composition in resistance-trained men. Researchers found that while both the placebo and fenugreek groups significantly increased their strength during the first four weeks, only the fenugreek group saw significant increases in strength after eight weeks of training and supplementation. These findings suggest that fenugreek could help men continue to increase strength after reaching a dreaded plateau. Additionally, only the fenugreek group saw significant increases in lean body mass at both four and eight weeks. Fenugreek has also shown to improve sexual function and well-being.

Fenugreek is the primary ingredient in a safe and natural supplement for boosting Low Testosterone level called Chemforce. In addition to boosting testosterone, it has shown to improve sperm count, sperm morphology, and can help protect the male reproductive system. Comprised of Furosap® containing Protodioscin as the major fraction, Chemforce is a promising natural remedy that can help improve the overall quality of life in men who have low T. Have you considered the Seriousness of Low Testosterone?

Men like to make jokes about Low Testosterone but a deficiency in this hormone is no laughing matter. Finding yourself unable to perform can be an alarming first for many men. However, few realize that low T can lead to serious illnesses like diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease.

A simple blood test can reveal if you have low T and, in this article, we will discuss the role of testosterone, lesser-known effects of low T, and treatment options to consider.

What is Normal?

Loss of testosterone is gradual, dropping by about 1% to 1.5% each year beginning at around age 40. This steady decline as a result can leave men feeling less energetic, depressed and less manly.

what is normal

A normal testosterone level will measure in a lab via a blood test at 300 to 1,000 nanograms per deciliter. However, a confirmation is needed to determine if someone has low T since these hormone levels can fluctuate throughout the day.

The Role of Testosterone:

Testosterone plays an important role in the development of men. This hormone is the main driver of puberty and is responsible for a man’s deep voice, facial hair, and muscle growth. Without testosterone, men wouldn’t have pubic hair or produce sperm. Importantly, testosterone is what gives men their sex drive.

A decline in blood testosterone after a certain age is normal however there are other, more serious causes of low T. Testicular cancer including chemo and radiation therapy as well as other forms of cancer can deplete testosterone. Excess alcohol and certain medications may be the cause in addition to pituitary and thyroid conditions. Injuries to the testes may also drain your testosterone.

What if you have Low Testosterone?

Low T can be a serious condition if left unaddressed. While a simple blood test can determine if you have low T, there are some lesser-known effects low testosterone can have on the male body:

3

  • Decreased bone density which can lead to osteoporosis
  • Irritability, depression and an inability to focus
  • A build up of body fat around the midsection which can lead to serious illnesses like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers

Treatment:

There are a number of treatments that raise testosterone back up to a normal level, which should typically hover around 300 to 500 ng/dL.

Deep muscle injections are the most common and cost effective method of treatment. Administered every two to ten weeks, patients will feel the largest bump in testosterone during the first few days, after which levels begin to drop. If you are shy of needles, this may not be the best option as the injections themselves can be quite painful.

Treatment

Patches and gels are another form of low T treatment and can be applied daily to the skin where the testosterone is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. A simple and easy to use method of treatment, some side effects include skin irritations like rashes and itching. This product must also be kept out of reach of children and your partner. A nasal gel is now available to help protect others from exposure.

Implants under the skin are the newest methods of treatment. Once they are inserted, they work continuously for six months. While infections, bleeding and bruising around the insertion point are possible, these side effects are rare.

Side Effects do exist:

side-effects

Testosterone treatment can come with several risks. For some men, testosterone treatment can turn off the body’s own testicular function including both sperm and testosterone production therefore, treatment is not always recommended for men who want to conceive a child.

Testosterone replacement therapy may also increase a man’s risk for blood clots and can accelerate age-related enlargement of the prostate. Though, little evidence exists suggesting that T therapy can cause prostate cancer.

As long as you are taking testosterone, however, your doctor will likely monitor the health of your prostate.

Keep Watch of Your Health:

Watch-your-diet

While considering a treatment plan, also take into account your overall health. Maintaining a healthy diet and the right amount of exercise is vital to balanced hormones.

Fat speeds up the metabolizing of testosterone. The more fat you carry, the faster you will burn through an already depleted hormone. If you want to get the most out of testosterone therapy, put your health first and exercise regularly, eat a diet rich in whole plant foods and keep your weight down.

Natural supplements for Testosterone have shown added benefits as well:

A study out of University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas examined the effects of fenugreek supplementation on strength and body composition in resistance-trained men.

ANDROPAUSE IN MIDDLE AGED MEN & BENEFITS OF FENUGREEK SEEDS EXTRACT

Introduction:

Testosterone (T) is a powerful male sex hormone produced by the testicles and is responsible for the proper development of male sexual characteristics. It controls sex drive, regulates sperm production, promotes muscle mass, increases energy and also influences human behavior (such as aggression and competitiveness). Levels of testosterone are at highest during adolescence and early adulthood. The first physical signs of testosterone or androgens in the body are apparent during puberty characterized by change in voice; broadening of shoulders and masculinization of facial structure. But as men get older, their testosterone levels decline about 1% per year after age of 30. The changes in testosterone with age in males are given below in the table:

Age Testosterone Level (ng/dL)
0-5 months 75-400
6 months-9 yrs. <7-20
10-11 yrs. <7-130
12-13 yrs. <7-800
14 yrs. <7-1,200
15-16 yrs. 100-1,200
17-18 yrs. 300-1,200
19+ yrs. 240-950
Avg. Adult Male 270-1,070
30+ yrs. -1% per year

In men, serum concentrations of testosterone get decreased to a greater extent with increase in age. This decrease in serum testosterone levels in men is referred as “andropause” or “late-onset hypogonadism (LOH)”. Several cross-sectional and longitudinal studies showed a decline in serum testosterone concentration, an increase in sex hormone-binding globulin concentration (SHBG) and a decrease in free testosterone levels with advancing age. Approximately 2.4 million men, aged 40 to 49 years, have low testosterone levels, with a new diagnosis of about 481,000 androgen deficiency cases a year.

Mechanism of decline in testosterone level during aging:

  • Male hypogonadism is a clinical syndrome caused by lack of androgens and may reflect abnormalities of the hypothalamus, pituitary, testes or target tissues. Testosterone levels found to be reduced in aged men. 20% of men aged over 60 years have total testosterone levels below the normal range and the figure rises to 50% in those aged over 80 years. Levels of gonadotropin rise during aging and testicular secretory responses to human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) are reduced. This shows that reduced testosterone level may be caused primarily by testicular failure.
  • There is also elevation in luteinizing hormone (LH) and the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels (hypergonadotropic hypogonadism). Therefore, it seems like that there are changes in endogenous production of GnRH (gonadotrophin releasing hormone), which cause the changes in LH secretion and play a role in the age related decline in testosterone.
  • With increase in age, there is also a reduction in androgen receptor concentration in some target tissues and this may contribute to hypogonadism or LOH. Thus the decrease in testosterone levels with aging seems to reflect changes at all levels of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis

Consequences of low testosterone level during aging in men:

Testosterone is sometimes thought as “fountain of youth” hormone. Decreased testosterones levels lead to changes in sexual function and mood changes including

  • Reduced sexual desire or low libido
  • Fewer spontaneous erections
  • Erectile dysfunction or impotence
  • Osteoporosis
  • Changes in sleep patterns or depression
  • Emotional changes, such as low self-confidence or lack of motivation and energy
  • Physical changes, like increased body fat, reduced muscle bulk and strength, and decreased bone densitynew-1

Fenugreek extract and its effect on testosterone boosting:

Medically, testosterone deficiency may be treated by using testosterone supplementation i.e. testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which can boost testosterone levels back to normal. Testosterone deficiency can be treated by, intramuscular injections (given anywhere from two to 10 weeks apart), testosterone gel applied to the skin or inside the nose, mucoadhesive material applied above the teeth twice a day, long-acting subcutaneous pellet, testosterone stick (apply like underarm deodorant).  But this therapy has certain risks (such as blood clots and stroke) and side effects (such as sleep apnea, acne, and breast enlargement). Losing excess weight and being physically active can also raise a man’s testosterone level.

In traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Homeopathy, herbs and spices have been used since the beginning of time. Fenugreek (Botanical name: Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a plant, cultivated annually in Arabic regions and India, for use in food. The seeds are used as a spice in Indian cooking. Fenugreek seeds contain 45% dietary fiber, vitamins, plant sugars and minerals. Seeds and leaves of fenugreek provide various bioactive components such as steroidal saponins including diosgenin, yamogenin, gitogenin, tigogenin and neotigogens, other bioactive components including choline and trimethylamine, retinol, vitamin D, riboflavin, pyridoxine and essential oils.

Studies on Testosterone Boosting effect of Fenugreek:

Maintenance of healthy testosterone levels:

A clinical study conducted by Steels and co workers on 60 healthy males, aged between 25 – 52 years. The duration of the study was six weeks and 600mg extract of fenugreek seeds was consumed orally, by all the subjects. Serum testosterone and prolactin levels were estimated at the end of the study. The major outcome of the study was that levels of testosterone and prolactin were maintained within the normal physiological limits. Increased muscle strength and improved libido was also observed without any change in mood or sleep patterns. So it was concluded from the study that fenugreek extract helps maintain natural healthy testosterone levels.

2. Improvement in lean muscle mass and body composition:

Fenugreek is considered to possess aromatase and reductase inhibitor activities, the enzymes responsible for breakdown of testosterone in body. To determine this activity, a clinical study was conducted by Wilborn and co workers; in three groups of healthy trained men for 2, 4 and 8 weeks and 500mg of fenugreek extract per day was administered to all subjects. Testosterone levels, body fat , muscle gain and strength was evaluated at the end of study. Increase in testosterone levels was observed at the end of the study. A reduction in body fat was also observed that is directly linked to improved androgenic activity. Therefore it was concluded that fenugreek extract improves the testosterone levels by partially blocking the enzymes responsible for breakdown of testosterone.

3. Fenugreek acts by inhibiting enzymes that breakdown testosterone:

Boost Testosterone Naturally

Hypogonadism, otherwise known as low T or low testosterone, is a condition where the production of testosterone in men is inhibited. This hormone is essential to men’s health especially for maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and sex drive. Testosterone production is at its highest in early adulthood but will slowly decline a little bit each year thereafter.

Men diagnosed with hypogonadism or experiencing symptoms of low testosterone may benefit from testosterone therapy. This is not recommended however if your testosterone levels fall within the normal range for you age.

Ultimately, there is no magic solution for boosting testosterone however there are a number of natural remedies that can help in addition to consulting your doctor. In this article we provide a summary of the most important natural remedies and lifestyle changes that can make all the difference in men with low testosterone.

Do you have Low Testosterone?

Men with low testosterone may experience decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, fragile bones, and other health issues. Experiencing the symptoms of low T, however, may indicate an underlying medical condition. Visiting your doctor for a simple blood test is the first step if you suspect you have low testosterone. The results will determine if your testosterone levels fall within the normal range for your age.

Get Enough Sleep:

Sleep may be the easiest way to help regulate hormone production. Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that lack of sleep can greatly reduce a young, healthy man’s testosterone levels. The results are clear after only one week of sleep deprivation. Testosterone levels were particularly low between 2 and 10 p.m. on sleep-restricted days. Study participants also reported a decreased sense of wellbeing as their blood testosterone levels dropped.

get enough sleep

How much sleep your body needs depends on many factors. Most adults generally need between seven and nine hours per night in order to function well and lead a healthy life.

Trim the Fat:

Excess fat on the body can disrupt normal hormone production. Particularly, overweight, middle-aged men with pre-diabetes are likely to have low-testosterone levels. A study from The Journal of Endocrinology revealed that low T and diabetes are closely linked. Men who maintain a normal weight have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes as well as hypogonadism.

Research published in the European Journal of Endocrinology further confirms that losing some weight can help boost your testosterone. Though, this does not mean you should restrict your calorie intake, over exercise or go on a crash diet. The best way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight is through an abundant, plant based diet and regular exercise.

Fix Your Poor Diet:

The simplest way to shed fat is to avoid foods high in fat and saturated fat such as refined oils (vegetable especially), and a number of animal products including beef, poultry, cheese, milk and eggs. Before you ask about protein, the average human needs 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. To put this into perspective, 70 grams of protein would be the appropriate amount for a 200 pound person, while 120 grams would be appropriate for someone weighing 330 pounds. Basically, everyone has more than enough and everyone can get the amount they need by eating foods like whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables daily.

Consuming plant food as your main source of protein also floods your body with antioxidants, fiber, minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals. 100 grams of quinoa for example, provides 14 grams of protein along with 25 percent of the RDA for both iron and vitamin B6 and almost 50 percent of the RDA for magnesium. It also packs 563 mg of potassium. The same measure of beef comes in at 26 grams of protein, and only 14 percent iron, 20 percent B6, a paltry 5 percent magnesium and 318 mg of potassium. It’s also more than double the fat at 15 grams with 90 mg of cholesterol, while quinoa has just 6 grams of fat and zero cholesterol.

Animal protein, on the other hand, floods your body with saturated fat, cholesterol, added hormones and antibiotics that can disrupt the natural production of hormones in the human body. Even the lean cuts of meat are still filled with added hormones and antibiotics in addition to bacteria, parasites, and carcinogens.

Check for Mineral Deficiencies:

Men with low testosterone may have mineral deficiencies like zinc and magnesium in particular. Studies suggest that zinc plays an important part in regulating serum testosterone levels in healthy men. Eating foods that are rich in this essential nutrient may help including whole grains, beans and nuts. You may also want to consider adding a ZMA supplement to your diet. Adult males should aim to get 11 mg of zinc each day.

Other safe and natural supplements can be beneficial in addition to consulting a doctor.

Chemforce, for example, is a healthful dietary supplement reported to improve sperm count, sperm morphology, and can help protect the male reproductive system. Comprised of Furosap® containing Protodioscin as the major fraction, Chemforce has shown to help improve overall quality of life in men who have low T. Protodioscin is clinically evaluated with proven safety and efficacy and is US patented. Alpha Yohimbine (Rauwolscine), another ingredient in Chemforce is a known aphrodisiac. It helps in improving athletic performance & mood boosting.

You Have to Exercise:

Studies show that overall testosterone levels increase after exercise, especially after resistance training. Low testosterone levels can also affect your sex drive and your mood. On the flip side, exercise improves mood and stimulates brain chemicals that induce feelings of happiness and confidence. Exercise also boosts energy and endurance, and helps you sleep better. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day.

The Bottom Line:

Learning that you have low testosterone can be unsettling but it’s no reflection of your manhood. Only a doctor can tell you if you have low T so don’t hesitate to get a blood test. If you have an underlying condition, a doctor can prescribe medication. Often, a few lifestyle changes in addition to the right supplement are all you need to restore testosterone levels and improve your overall well-being.
